Moors and Christians of Alcoy 2016

The Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos 2016 in Alcoy will be held from 21 to 24 April.

The Moors and Christians festivities in Alcoy are considered to be of international tourist interest.

These famous festivities recreate the Battle of Alcoy, which took place in 1276, when the inhabitants of this city are supposed to have fought against the Muslim warlord Alazraq. Legend has it that the equestrian figure of St George makes his appearance on the city walls and that his intervention was decisive in the outcome of the battle.

Every year the people of Alcoy pay homage to this historical event by celebrating these famous festivities where there is a mixture of inexplicable sensations. It is the music, the gunpowder, the enthusiasm, the dedication and the people that make it a unique experience.

It is during these four days that the tourist can see a spectacular festival with the whole city decorated with a special bower, lights, the castle and the joy of the people of Alcoy.
In 2016 the festivities will be held from 22 to 24 April.

Our hotel offers you the possibility to purchase tickets for the chairs at the St. George’s Association, these chairs are placed along the entrance route and cost approximately €15 per person.

This amount will be paid to the hotel at the time of check-in and the customer will be handed their tickets.

In the photograph you can see the Plaza de España where all the bands participating in the parade have congregated and then in unison play the notes of the Hymn of the Fiesta of Alcoy. This year the direction of the anthem has fallen to Japan’s Hiroshi Fujii, a privilege for all those who have been selected over the years. It is a very exciting moment for everyone present. The day of Las Entradas is perhaps the most spectacular day for the visitor, a day when the streets of the city centre of Alcoy are flooded with fantasy, ingenuity and joy. This was one of the most spectacular choreographies ever seen in Alcoy.

One of the most eye-catching attractions of the Moors and Christians Festivities in Alcoy are the different ballets that perform spectacular choreographies full of colour, music and joy. They are performed by groups of dancers, in many cases professional dancers, who make the entrances a spectacle for tourists and visitors, but mainly for the people of Alcoy who experience the festivities in a different way.
