We should remember that the Font Roja Natural Park is the first protected area in the Valencian Community, dating back to 1332, although it was not until 1987 that the Generalitat Valenciana declared it a Natural Park.
“Seven centuries of protection”
“The first written reference in the Municipal Archives of Alcoy speaks of this place with the name “La Teixeda”, and the first time we find this name dates back to no less than the year 1300, the last year of the 13th century. And only a few years later, we have the first measures to protect the environment, specifically from the year 1332-.
This protection is not due to ecological reasons, but to economic ones: the forest of La Teixeda – today Carrascal de la Font Roja – provided the natives of Alcoy with firewood, charcoal, pasture and other elements typical of a dense forest like La Teixeda; in case of hardship the poor of the town of Alcoy – numerous in former times – found in it sustenance to cope with their misfortune”.
