The Rock Paintings of La Sarga, in Alcoy, were discovered in 1951.
This magnificent collection of prehistoric art can be found in rock shelters in the Barranc de la Cova Foradada ravine and very close to the hamlet of La Sarga. Three of the prehistoric artistic horizons of the eastern façade of the Iberian Peninsula are represented, in the interior of the province of Alicante.
The colour clearly differentiates Macro-schematic Art, Levantine Art and Schematic Art, so representative of our community.
UNESCO declared them a “World Heritage Site” in 1998 and they are considered an Asset of Cultural Interest.
There is evidence that La Sarga is a sanctuary and that it was never used as a dwelling. On its walls, several generations of farmers and stockbreeders left testimonies of their beliefs, which changed as their economic and social bases were transformed.
The natural environment, very close to the Font Roja Natural Park, which surrounds this archaeological complex is worthy of admiration for its high mountains and valleys where apple trees, cherry trees and olive groves, among others, are grown.
