Modernism Week in Alcoy from 17th to 23rd of September

The other day while I was talking to a journalist about the Modernism Week in Alcoy I made him reflect on the fact that in Alcoy when it comes to organising something they do not skimp on ingenuity, creativity, enthusiasm, commitment and this can be seen when you see the staging of the most spectacular festivals that can be seen such as the Moors and Christians of Alcoy and the Cavalcade of the Three Kings on the 5th of January. In Alcoy, this small city in the province of Alicante, located between the mountains and two natural parks, the Font Roja and the Serra de Mariola, boasts an architectural heritage of great value due to its Modernist style buildings, art nouveau, Jugendstil, sezession, etc. This is the reason why in 2010 Alcoy was included in the European Route of Modernism

This preamble serves only to anticipate that if you can get away and come and visit us from 17 to 23 September you will find a city fully staged in the theme, shops, activities and all kinds of exhibitions will make you enjoy a different experience.

In the web of Turismo Alcoy you can find all the information about our city and in this link you can find the programme of the Modernism Week.

This year the Second Edition of the Modernist Fair of Alcoy is dedicated to the main modernist sculptor of the city, Lorenzo Ridaura (Alcoy 1871 – Anna, Valencia 1963).

The sculptor Lorenzo Ridaura was educated in Barcelona and Madrid and came from a family of the industrial bourgeoisie of Alcoy who owned the “Lorenzo Ridaura” paper factory. His father, Francisco Ridaura, was mayor of Alcoy.

He began his studies in 1890 at the School of Arts and Crafts in Barcelona.

He settled in Madrid between 1899 and 1916 and came into contact with the sculptures of Madrid modernism. He received several sculpture prizes in national competitions. In 1916 he returned to his hometown, Alcoy, where he developed the rest of his great work.

It is precisely thanks to the important industrial development of Alcoy and its socio-cultural link with the high bourgeoisie that the Modernist style is produced in this inland city of Alicante, inspired by nature and beauty.
